| John's Big Day - 05 Sep 2010 |
On Sunday 5th September the club held a game to celebrate the birthday of our Honourary President John Day M.B.E. John ceremonially faced the first over from grandson Keiron and was delighted with the cap and signed bat presented to him by the club.
The 24 over a side game which followed was a very tight affair contested by two strong teams, The Chairman's XI posted 130 with Simon Stewart and Chris Nolan the leading scorers. In the President's XI innings Paul Kingham knocked Karl Hansson's leg stump back in the first over but Matty Jackson batted well to set up the run chase which was continued by Dan Speight and Jordan Acton. When Speight fell it was left to Kingham to hit the winning boundary with one ball to spare.
A thoroughly enjoyable day for all involved was rounded off with a barbeque, and there was general agreement that 'President's Day' should become an annual event. |
| Disappointment All Round - 05 Sep 2010 |
South Shore 142 for 5 (2 pts) Torrisholme 145 for 2 (10 pts) The 1st XI hosted struggling South Shore, and after a dry week the visitors decided to fill their boots on a 'Bayton Brahmer'. Matty Jackson struggled to breach the South Shore batters defences and it was Andy Miller who took the first two wickets, both LBW. James Reddy (40) batted steadily and D Tracey added a hard hit 46 but all the Torrisholme bowlers did a tidy job with Graham Lee and Neil Jordan chipping in with wickets as South Shore ground their way to 142 for 5 in 45 overs. In reply Andy Butler and Andy Miller gave the hosts a flying start with 36 from 6 overs before Butler was comically run out, adding pain to the finger broken in the field. Miller, who struggled with the bat early in the season but has batted beautifully in the last few weeks, carried the attack to South Shore and eventually fell for 65. Dan Speight and Karl Hansson (45 no) saw Torrisholme home inside 30 overs. A comprehensive 10 point win, unfortunately Eccleston managed to trounce Croston (shorn of main man Lee Childs) and gain 2 points over the piece. Torrisholme now only hold a 6 point cushion over Eccleston in the relegation battle, with one game to play.
St Annes 164 for 8 (12 pts) Torrisholme 111 All Out (2 pts) The seconds travelled to St Annes and asked the hosts to bat on the usually placid deck at BAe Warton. St Annes batted steadily with Andrew Jarvis making 84 and Ashley Ward 31, they accumulated 164 for 8 in 45 overs with Dave Jarvis taking 3 for 50, both Mark Cottam and Dan Woods picked up two wickets. A challenging but eminently gettable score, unfortunately no one played the major innings required to chase it down, Simon Hicks top score with 41, with Sean McGuigan (17) and Chris Nolan (14) chipping in but 111 All Out was only good for 2 points. This leaves Mark Cottam's promotion chasing team with a mountain to climb on the last day of the season, needing Vernons to have a nightmare while they need to beat champions Leyland. |
| First XI Thriller, Second XI Cruise - 29 Aug 2010 |
Fulwood +Broughton CC 198 All Out (11 pts) Torrisholme 190-8 (6 pts)
After winning the toss and asking Fulwood to bat Matty Jackson must have been rueing his decision as Michael Kippax went berserk taking ten an over off the opening attack of Jackson and the returning european tourist Dave Jarvis. Kippax made a violent 91 and was well supportd by Altaf Ahmed with 30 and Ben Fitch with 33. A rain break and a change to the controlled medium pace of Andy Miller (4-50) and the left arm awkward of Graham Lee (3-43) brought great rewards as Fulwoods late order subsided and they ended up 198 All Out.
In reply Graham Clarke fell early but the rest of the order took this blow on the chin and set about chasing the target. Andy Miller made a fluent 32, Neil Jordan made 34 and Matty Jackson made 28 but it was Paul Batty's 50 not out which nearly took the visitors home. They ended up just short on 190 for 8 in the reduced 42 over game, taking a creditable 6 points to Fulwood's 11.
Fleetwood 64 All Out (0 pts) Torrisholme 66 for No Wicket (12 pts)
Another short game at Boundary Meadow as Fleetwood, weakened by football cry offs, subsided to 64 All Out in 28 overs. Jack Andreae took 7 for 20 with Simon Hicks picking up two wickets and Alex Hey one.
The makeshift Fleetwood attack did not greatly trouble Hicks (29 not out) and John Lee (30 not out) as they cruised to 66 in 10 overs. The hosts then retired to the pavilion to do a rain dance in the hope that Vernon's game at Croston would be rained off, no such luck unfortunately but Vernon's failure to bowl out Croston means Torrisholme go back above them in the promotion race.

| Controversy Dogs The Club, Colts Finals Shared - 25 Aug 2010 |
White Coppice CC 122 for 8 (12pts) Torrisholme CC 112 AO (5 pts)
Batting first Coppice made a good start against Matty Jackson and Andy Miller with mainman Kyle Dixon(45) to the fore, but the introduction of Graham Lee(4/37) and Neil Jordan (4/48) saw them struggle and the run rate slowed substantially. In the final overs the first of a number of controversial umpiring decisions took place when the square leg umpire appeared to be woken up by a stumping appeal, his reaction of not out baffled everyone, including the batsman who had given up and was still a foot out when the decision was given. Coppice finished on 122 for 8 on a drying surface, gettable but challenging.
The second innings began steadily with Andy Miller and Grahame Clarke struggling against the Coppice attack, then the same umpire struck again giving Clarke LBW when he appeared to be very well forward. The next to suffer was Daniel Hatton, also LBW but the critical LBW was against Andy Miller who had started to dominate and was sawn off for 52. All given by the same umpire. The lower order rallied with Adam Bee and Matty Jackson each making 14 but with overs running out the last few wickets fell leaving Torrisholme 110 All Out. A critical result determined in the most part by the incompetence of one umpire. In contrast his colleague, John Geddes, confirmed his credentials as a fine umpire and retained the respect of all the players participating.
Torrisholme CC 154 AO (3 pts) Vernon Carus 157 for 6 (12 pts)
This game had been made more critical by the withdrawal of Harris Park from the league, effectively awarding Vernons 8 points and putting them within striking distance of Torrisholme in the top of the league promotion slots. Batting first Mark Cottam (53) and Simon Hicks (31) were the main contributors with other players chipping in and J Bailey taking 7 wickets for Vernons as Torrisholme ammassed 154 All Out in the penultimate over.
The Vernons response was solid and circumspect, they accumulated steadily through the innings and despite taking 6 wickets Torrisholme were unable to prevent Vernons claiming the win which takes them ahead of Torrisholme after the points adjustment.
The next three games are now critical, with all Torrisholme players urged to make themselves available to ensure the 1st XI stave off relegation and the 2nd XI can collect three wins and regain their deserved promotion place.
Mid Week League Finals On Sunday 22nd August Torrisholme Colts played Westgate Colts in two Mid Week league finals. A glorious day did justice to two closely contested games. In the 20 over Cup Final, held on Westgate, Torrisholme prevailed with Michael Stevens and Dan Woods providing the winning partnership.
A quick switch to Boundary Meadow for the 16 Over Cup Final saw Westgate just come out winners as Rob Elder, Jack Andreae and Paddy Hunt all got good runs for the hosts. Honours even, a very fair outcome between two well matched teams on a day when cricket weather returned, albeit briefly. Both clubs were keen to offer their thanks to the groundsmen for providing excellent decks after a week of rain, to the scorers and umpires and particularly to Mid Week League Supremo Barry Griffin for all his hard work in organising the league and the finals. |
| 100 Chances to Win Big! - 19 Aug 2010 |
2011 will see the launch of the Torrisholme CC 100 Club which is open to all members, supporters and parents. The purpose of the club is to raise substantial funding to continue and broaden the club's activities. With a substantial drop off in sponsorship and grant income we need to find alternative ways to fund our activities, we have decided upon the 100 Club as an alternative to steep increases in membership fees and we hope that all senior members and most junior parents will agree to participate. The club is grateful to Eddy Bayton for offering to administer the project which is scheduled to make it's first draw at the January 2011 AGM with subsequent draws on a monthly basis. Rules and entry forms will be circulated soon. |
