| Firsts Thwarted by Rain, Seconds Scrape Home. - 27 Jun 2009 |
After a week of glorious weather Saturday 27th June was blighted by heavy showers. The first XI batted well, with Mark Cottam again starring with 80 Not Out supported by Paul McKevitt's 40 and Paul Batty's 45 the hosts put together an impressive 210 for 6 on another Bayton flat top. In response White Coppice had made 104 for 3, with Paul Batty taking all three, before the rain put paid to hopes of completing a well balanced game. 5 points to Torrisholme and 1 to Coppice.
At Penwortham the second XI batted first and were given a solid start by Steve Hatton(32) and Mark Drinkall(16). They fell closely followed by John Lee and it was left to Dan Speight (13) and Adam Bee (34) to rebuild. Two rain breals cut the innings to 40 overs and forced Bee to push on. When he fell after making a huge dent in his batting partner's car with a powerful six Steve Neave once again marshalled the lower order, supported by Fran Stewart (9) and the innings closed at 185 for 9. Having recently chased down 230 on two occassions Penwortham were confident of a win but this confidence was dented by Adam Ball's diving catch to dismiss Sederville in the second over. Dan Speight tore in and proved too good for Goodin, Parkinson and Walsh.Steve Neave struck to remove Walmesley and Groom but Kev Armer was hitting boundaries and looked like he could win the game on his own. He finally fell for 45, well caught by Hatton off Neave but then heavy rain returned and looked like it would end the game. A break in the rain allowed play to continue and Adam Bee struck twice to leave Torrisholme needing one wicket for a win. With rain threatening again the persevering Neave was replaced by Fran Stewart's flighted leg spin and his wiles proved too much for N Walmsley who's ugly slog resulted in the clatter of stumps as Torrisholme recorded their first win for six weeks. Just in time, it transpired, as rain returned within a few minutes, but a fantastic performance by a very committed team who, in the end, out batted, bowled and fielded Penwortham with John Lee, Alex Hey and 'Keeper Jordan Acton outstanding on a rough ground. |
| Grand Opening! - 27 Jun 2009 |
The England and Wales Cricket Board, who funded the bulk of the new building, have asked us to plan for a media launch on Sunday 16th August. We plan to run an event around the actual opening which will be conducted by the ECB in the presence of a cricket celebrity, as yet unnamed. This is the plan:
12.30 pm-Under 11 game with two teams from Torrisholme, 10 overs per side.
2.00 pm-Opening Ceremony involving ECB and SITA Trust, media and invited guests.
2.30 pm-Senior Game. Torrisholme President’s XI v Torrisholme Chairman’s XI in 20/20 format
6 pm-Games completed, social evening, raffle etc.
We would plan to get someone to run a barbeque through the afternoon and make an open invitation to seniors, juniors, parents, friends of the club, sponsors, Trustees, some people involved in the project etc to attend.
The Under 11 coaches will be asking lads if they are available to play over the next few weeks, similarly with senior players and I am seeking some volunteers to help on the day with a barbeque. Most importantly I would like to invite all players, parents, friends, supporters, past and present to come along for the opening and the games. So if you know someone who has been involved at the club in the past please let them know.
Fingers crossed for a glorious day!

| Depleted Under 16s Pull Off Win - 25 Jun 2009 |
With 6 regular players unavailable because of illness, school events and holidays a number of younger squad members were thrust into the limelight and they proved themselves worthy successors. Trimpell won the toss and elected to bat, Shrish Parmeshwar bowled beautifully and made two early breakthroughs supported by skipper David Jarvis. Fran Stewart, Zach Archer and Matty Crewdson each took two wickets as Trimpell were held to 94 for 8, top scorer was S Dixon with 17. In reply Torrisholme looked to be in trouble with Fran Stewart, Dan Woods and Matty Crewdson out early. Matty Crossley counterattacked but when he fell for 24 it was down to the young pretenders to save the day. Lewis McGrath rebuilt with Shrish Parmeshwar then with Tim Daglish and when he fell for a classy 24 Anthony Allen (6no) and David Jarvis (6 no) saw their team home with an over to spare. Six wins from six games played and a crucial trip to Ingleton next week. |
| Under 13 in Nerve Jangler - 22 Jun 2009 |
After a win against Carnforth and a defeat to Ingleton, the under 13's went into the match versus Westgate needing a win.
Torrisholme won the toss and put Westgate into bat and they reached a great total of 96-7 with Sam Kirby taking an early wicket and bowling tight. After a solid start by Westgate, Dan Towers came on to bowl and took 2 wickets in one over to really disrupt the batting restricting the score to 29-3. Westgate then began to hit out, losing wickets to the bowling of Sam Crewdson (3/17) they reached their total of 96 with some great running between the wickets.
Torrisholme went out to bat and a partnership forged between Jake Archer (16) and Sam Kirby (20 n.o.) with Brad Diamond coming in to up the run rate as well, taking the score to 51-0. However Elliott Chapman came in and destroyed all the good work, taking the 3 wickets of Archer, Crewdson and McTominay in one over to change the whole game with the score at 51-3. All was not lost though as Will Waterton stepped up to the crease and batted responsibly scoring 18 with some lovely boundaries and partnering Diamond (15) to keep the run rate ticking over. As more wickets fell, Torrisholme needed 14 from 3 overs. Waterton was dismissed by Hunter and the Westgate field was closing in and singles were hard to come by. This led to 3 run outs in quick succession and the game was tied with one ball left. M. Trotter bowled his last ball that was a wide and handed victory to Torrisholme scoring 97-9.
The lads travel to Shireshead next week needing another win to keep their title hopes alive. |
| Weakened Teams Struggle - 22 Jun 2009 |
With over 20 players unavailable for various reasons both first and second elevens had unfamiliar looks on Saturday 20th June and they both struggled.
The first XI travelled to Eccleston and started well but a critical 37 from David Hewson low in the order scrambled the hosts to 145 All Out in 45 overs with Matty Jackson the key bowler taking 7 for 48. He was well supported by Mark Cottam and David Jarvis. In reply Torrisholme were given a flyer by Paul McKevitt (25) and Grahame Clarke (24) but the middle and lower order struggled. Andy Butler (16) and Dan Hatton (13no batting with the tail) could not muster enough runs to challenge for a win as they were all out for 106 collecting 4 points.
At home Steve Hatton captained the seconds as Eccleston 2nds compiled 190 for 6, good contributions all through the order with Andrew Emmerton (42) top scorer. Steve Neave toiled away to take 4 for 73 with Jack Hunt and Fran Stewart each taking a wicket. Torrisholme lost Hatton (7) and John Lee(11) early. Stewart (8) and the ever reliable Neave (39) rebuilt, Jack Hunt (29) batted well with Neave and briefly threatened the Eccleston attack but a collapse left the tail chasing bonus points. Useful contributions from Paul Kingham (9), Adam Ball (9), Jordan Acton (8no) and Elliott Hatton (5) saw Torrisholme to a batting point as they were finally dismissed for 138 in the 44th over. |
