Lost Weekend - 07 Sep 2008
All the games scheduled for Saturday 6th September were called off thanks to the unbelievably wet weather over the last two months converting most grounds into swamps.

This means that the second XI are now mathematically safe and the first XI need to match the number of points gathered by Croston to guarantee 1st Division cricket next season. It will all come down to the last game away at Vernon Carus on Saturday 13th September.

Weekend of Struggle - 02 Sep 2008
With a large number of players unavailable for various reasons both 1st and 2nd XIs were well understrength for Saturdays games and it showed in the results.

The first XI travelled to a very wet Norcross, the weather had been so poor that the hosts had been unable to properly cut the outfield but a propmpt start was made and Torrisholme asked them to bat. Matty Jackson (2 for 34) and David Jarvis (0 for 8) both bowled impressive early spells and reduced Norcross to 23 for 3. Chris Allen(28) was badly dropped, as was Steve Hill (40) and these misses were to prove very costly as Norcross accumulated 148 for 8 when they really should have been held to 110. Mark Cottam bowled well to take 4 for 63 but 148 was always going to be a test.
In reply Paul McKevitt and Grahame Clarke made a solid but not imposing start, they couldn't push on and both fell to LBW decisions, Clarke's did seem to be 'unlucky'. Paul Batty and Andy Butler couldn't pick up the pace and Mark Cottam (21) and Karl Hansson(14) were the only batsman to breifly break out. The lower order perished trying to hit boundaries and the innings ended on 96 in the penultimate over. Chris Openshaw was the most successful bowler with 4 for 36 but the man most responsible for the win was Nadeem who's 14 overs only cost 14 runs.
Torrisholme only took 2 points when better catching would have meant 10, leaving the upcoming home game against Croston as a virtual relegation decider.

A very young second XI hosted Fulwood and were asked to bat on a predictably slow, low wicket. Dan Hatton (10) batted very sensibly and at 23 for 1 a decent total was on the cards as Jack Hunt hit a couple of boundaries, however they fell and the lower couldn't come to terms with the bowling and collapsed to 55 All Out. Fulwood's reply was met with a determined effort by Chris Nolan's youngsters as Andy Steven had three early wickets, Shrish Parmeshwar took one and Nolan himself took one. A creditable performance by the lads but they couldn't prevent Fulwood completing a five wicket win, however one important point was gained.

Narrow Defeat Leaves 1st XI Battling - 24 Aug 2008
The first XI came second in a tight battle on Saturday, Fulwood asked them to bat and they compiled 127 on a very slow deck against tight bowling and fielding. Paul Troughton top scored with 38.
Fulwood struggled in reply and lost regular wickets, when the last pair came together 10 were still needed but they managed to scramble home with overs running out. With Croston winning the bottom of Division one is now very tight.
The second XI opted to bat first at Garstang 3rd XI, the experienced trio of Mark Cottam (2), Steve Hatton (6) and Mark Drinkall (15) all contrived to get out but the younger batters all took responsibility. The majestic John Lee (79) was well supported by Dan Hatton (13), James Burchall (14) and Wayne Troughton (24 not out) as the visitors compiled 161 for 6.
A very inexperienced Garstang team never looked likely to chase this down as Cottam and Matty Alderson bowled a string of early maidens. The first wicket fell at 18 in the 14th over but it was rapidly followed by five more. Alderson (3 for 20) and Cottam (5 for 15) bowled an unrelenting line and length to reduce Garstang to 30 for 6 and, in contrast to last week, the catching was very sharp with Matthew Crossley taking two stunners and Jack Grieve- Robson two more. At 30 for 6 a heavy shower looked like it might deny Torrisholme a deserved victory but a forty minute delay was followed by a further clatter of wickets. At 40 for 9 Andy Booker joined rising star Jake Smith at the crease and they showed what a good deck it was by batting the rest of the overs in relative comfort.Skipper Cottam tried all his bowling options without success but a haul of 9 points gives the second XI a 21 point lead over their relegation rivals with three games left.

Weather Intervenes - 16 Aug 2008
Both teams managed to loese the toss after a week of solid rain and this had a big impact on the results.

At Eccleston the 1st XI made 142 for 9 in their overs with Grahame Clarke showing he is a class act on any surface by top scoring with 66. Tim Wilkinson was the most successful Eccleston bowler with 4 for 18.
In reply Eccleston had progressed well to 70 for 1 when rain curtailed play, this result gave each team 4 points.

At Torrisholme stand in skipper Chris Nolan called incorrectly and, predictably, his team were asked to bat. Wayne Troughton and Mark Drinkall made a solid start until Troughton played round one and was bowled for 5. John Lee looked the class act he is while compiling 26 but then he and Drinkall (30) fell in quick succession. Jack Hunt (14), James Birchall(10), Chris Nolan(14) all tried to press the accelerator and Dan Hatton was unbelieveably unlucky to be run out backing up. Jack Grieve-Robson hit a clean six but 117 All Out did not look to be an imposing total.
Eccleston's reply was given the worst possible start as David Jarvis sent opener Crawley's leg stump cartwheeling with the first ball of the innings. Matty Alderson, bowling a tight line and length also had early success then Jarvis pulled off a stunning caught and bowled diving to his right. Eccleston were struggling at 20 for 3 but Goodman had been sent in to have a go as rain was expected. He prospered to the tune of 40 runs while being dropped 5 times as Eccleston moved to 80 for 3. Jarvis retuned top the attack and had an immediate impact as Jack Hunt took a steepling skier, then Dan Hatton held a more routine catch in the same over and the persevering Alderson had Baxendale caught by James Birchall. 80 for 3 had become 81 for 6, Adam Gregory made 11 before Alderson trapped him LBW to make it 97 for 7. At this point Flannigan was well caught at fly slip by Alderson off Jarvis but Jarvis was called for the only 'no ball' of the game. Flannigan then batted very sensibly with Greaves to complete the win at 118 for 7.
Eccleston took 10 points and Torrisholme 3 but Torrisholme will take great heart from the impressive fast bowling of Jarvis and Alderson. Indeed better catching would have given Torrisholme the victory and Jarvis five or six wickets.

Encouraging Weekend All Round - 03 Aug 2008
With a dismal weather forecast and half a dozen of the first eleven on holiday one both teams might have expected to struggle but not so.

A re-shuffled first XI hosted Hoghton who had no hesitation in asking them to bat on a wet deck after a week of rain. The track actually played well thanks to Deputy Groundsman Ben Pye but Grahame Clarke fell for one and the normally prolific Paul MecKeviit followed him for 13. Paul Troughton (33) looked in mid season form despite not playing for three months and he rebuilt the innings with Andy Butler (32) who is playing a key role in the team's recent success. When Troughton fell Butler carried on the good work with Dan Speight (30). Simon Hicks with a beligerent 18, Tom Burrow with a classy 17 not out, Mark Drinkall (10) and Matty Jackson (5no) meant that 170 for 7 was accumulated in 45 overs.

A drying track proved difficult to score on for Hoghton and they never came to terms with the scoring rate. Andy Stevens bowled 5 tight overs upfront while Matty Jackson had two early wickets. Simon Hicks replaced Stevens and then switched to the Westgate end while Tom Burrow took over the attack. He had Aaron Eccles brilliantly stumped by Troughton and this precipitated the rapid decline of the Hoghton line up. Hicks returned the figures of 6 for 40 while Matty Jackson returned to help wrap things up and take 3 for 29. The few first XI regulars present felt that this was the best performance of the year so far and great credit must go to the youngsters who came into the team and really performed. Tom Burrow with bat and ball, Andy Stevens with the ball and Jack Grieve-Robson who didn't have the opportunity to show of his batting skills but was totally committed in the field and impressed everybody with his attitude.

The second XI travelled to play Ribchester in a relegation dogfight and rarely can one man have so dominated a Palace Shield game. Skipper Mark Cottam won the toss and inserted Rib he then combined with fellow spinner Chris Nolan (3 for 52) to hold then to 142 for 7, taking 4 for 48 in the process. Then he opened with Steve Hatton (9), when Hatton fell Nolan (27 no) joined the rampant Cottam in knocking off the required runs for the fall of one wicket in 35 overs. Cottam finished with 103 not out as Torrisholme claimed 9 points to Ribchester's 2.
