| Disappointing Weekend All Round For Senior Teams - 26 Jul 2010 |
Saturday 24th July:
Torrisholme CC 107 AO (3pts) Fylde CC 3 for 0 RSP (5 pts)
For the second consecutive week a poor batting display by Torrisholme looked to have lost them the game, with 32 from Andy Butler only a late rally from Matty Jackson (34 no) got them past 100 at Fylde. 107 didn't appear to be enough but as the rain decended to kill the game the visitors breathed a sigh of relief and were glad to gain a lucky 3 points from the game to Fylde's 5.
Torrisholme 72 AO (2 pts) Kirkham and Wesham 0 / 0 RSP (5pts)
This top of the table battle did not start well for Torrisholme and went down hill from there with the top score of 21 from young Fran Stewart. 72 All Out had title rivals Kirkham rubbing their hands but, fortunately for the hosts, the rain arrived to save their bacon and Kirkham were unable to begin a chase. 2 slightly lucky points which, as with the first XI game on the same day, go some way to balancing earlier games which slipped from Torrisholme's grasp due to weather interference.
Crabtree Cup Semi Final, Sunday 25th July:
Torrisholme seconds visited Vernon Carus 3rds and gave a very creditable performance against a team from three divisions higher in the league. Batting first John Lee again showed his class with a well constructed 57, he was well supported down the order with most players chipping in, Mark Cottam made 21 and Simon Stewart made 19 no in a total of 170 for 9. Mark Hardiker starred with the ball and followed suit with the bat as his 52 saw VC post 100 in 15 overs, they appeared to be cruising. Mark Cottam's determined bunch of young stars and veterans dug in, Paul Kingham took a great catch to dismiss Hardiker and they began to picked up regular wickets. Dan Woods took a career best 3 for 20 but, in the end, VC had just too much strength in depth and ran out winners by 3 wickets with 4 overs to spare. Torrisholme miss out on the showpiece but the cup run has offered young and old the chance to shine against strong opposition and shine they generally have! |

| Italian Job - 19 Jul 2010 |
On Friday 16th July the club hosted Idle CC from just outside Milan, Italy. A mixed team of Italians and expats, Idle arrived to a ground which had been underwater three hours earlier.
Playing on the artificial surface out of necessity, Torrisholme batted first and were endebted to old boy Dan Milligan (64) for posting 180+, John Lee, Sean McGuigan and Matty Crossley contributed well. In reply Idle lost a couple of early wickets, including the crucial one of David Blain and didn't really threaten to win but had a throroughly good day and enjoyed a few beers and a barbeque afterwards. Idle CC invited Torrisholme to visit them in a reciprocal fixture in the future, something which we would love to do. |
| Wet Weekend , Mixed Results - 19 Jul 2010 |
Torrisholme 123ao (3pts) Freckleton 126-8 (12pts) A crucial toss and an inadequate batting performance sums up the Torrisholme display this week. After a week of wet weather it was remarkable and a credit to Eddy Bayton that the game started on time. Losing the toss Torrisholme were asked to bat on a damp deck. Hansson (14) and Butler (2) made a steady start but a loose waft saw then end of Butler and Hansson yorked himself after getting in; Torrisholme 25-2 from 9. A rebuilding partnership with the in form Miller and Batty (10) worked well until Batty holed out in the 16th to one that just wasn't there for it. Miller continued to play his shots and with Speight (34) they made light work of some ordinary bowling. Unfortunately one shot too many saw Miller depart for 43. With Jordan (0) and Bee (1) offering Speight no support he was left to bat with the tail. Unlike other weeks the tail didn't wag and a cameo from Matty Crewdson (8) was all it had to offer. Speight was the last man to depart, adjudged leg before to one that looked to be going towards leg and made contact a long way down. Torrisholme had it all to do again in the second innings. Not unfamiliar territory this season, they had a small total and extra overs to defend. Jackson (2-26) and Lee (1-57) bowled better then the figures suggest and had the Freck batsmen playing and missing on regular occasions. Torrisholme fielded well as a unit and when Lee had the dangerous Frank Holden caught by Crewdson things looked promising. Freck rallied and a solid partnership from Whitehead (26) and Holden Jnr seemed to be taking the game away from Torrisholme albeit very slowly. The score 47-1 off 22 saw Jordan introduced into the attacked; this had the desired effect, a skidding delivery that came back a little removed Whitehead's off peg. Another stale passage of play saw Holden Jnr score slowly and Whitsey (9) nibbled his way in support. Jordan then broke this partnership clean bowling Whitsey who was looking to accelerate the score. It became obvious this point that Freck had brought a long tail and Holden Jnr was going to have to do the majority of the scoring. He was up to the challenge and reached his 50 thanks to some good straight hitting off Lee. Jordan carried on taking wickets at the other end trapping Mcintyre (2) LBW. Jackson returned with Freck needing six runs to win. He tried to build the pressure with Jordan and was rewarded, clean bowling Street and then Mcguiness. It proved too little too late and despite Holden Jnr chipping one to Batty off Jordan (5-30) for a well crafted 64 the game was as good as won. Snape (4) sealed the win for Freck with a miss hit to third man. A disappointing day for Torrisholme; failing to bat their allotted overs proving costly once again. A trip to Fylde next week will hopefully but the winning wheels back in motion.
Torrisholme 180 for 8 (11 pts) Thornton Cleveleys 164 for 9 (5 pts)
Torrisholme Batted first at bottom placed Thornton and were in early trouble at 34 for 3, however the ever reliable Mark Cottam (43) was well supported by Dan Woods (25), Chris Nolan (25) and Paul Woods (45 no) in raising 180 for 8 in 45 overs on a very damp deck. Thornton never really threatened to win the game as they were pegged back by Jack Andreae (3 for 40) and Mark Cottam (4 for 50) well supported by a tight spell from Steve Neave. They settled for 5 points at 164 for 9 while Torrisholme just missed out on a full house with 11 points.
Crabtree Cup Torrisholme 218 for 6 Withnell Fold 72 for 9 (RSP)
Being asked to bat for the second consecutive day Mark Cottam's men again batted impressively as a team with the stylish John Lee (87) leading the way in a decisive partnership with Adam Bee (42). Mark Cottam chipped in with 34 and cameos from Dan Woods (15) and Matty Crewdson (8) saw the visitors to an imposing 218 for 6 in 40 overs. On a day when no cricket was played anywhere north of Preston, great credit is due to Withnell Fold for making the ground playable.
Withnell Fold never really got going and lost regular wickets, Torrisholme fielded brilliantly with Bee, Woods and Crewdson responsible for sharp run outs. The bowling was equally tight as Jack Andreae claimed four wickets to Adam Bee's three. When the rain finally arrived the hosts had struggled to 72 for 9 in 30 overs leaving Torrisholme to progress to next week's semi at Vernon Carus on run rate.

| Another Mixed Weekend - 04 Jul 2010 |
Torrisholme 100 All Out (12 pts) Eccleston CC 80 All Out (5 pts)
Torrisholme got off to a bad start loosing Karl Hansson early, he had to return to run for the injured Grahame Clarke who made a useful 25 in the best partnership of the day with Andy Miller (37), the middle and lower order struggled against determined bowling from Stuart White who took 6 for 38, only Neil Jordan chipping in with 13 as Torrisholme subsided to an inadequate looking 100 All Out.
In reply Eccleston struggled from the off against the pace of Matty Jackson and the guile and control of Graham Lee. No one really got going, Adam Gregory top scoring with 14, as Lee (6 for 35) and Jackson (3 for 24) ran through them. Neil Jordan again chipped in with a wicket as Eccleston were finally dismissed for 80 to give the visitors 12 vital points and keep them in touch with the top of the league.
Fylde 130 All Out (12 pts) Torrisholme 126 All Out (6 pts)
Batting first Fylde were soon in trouble against Jack Andreae and Mark Cottam and reached the depths of 37 for 6 at one point. Cottam (3 for 18) and Andreae (4 for 32) took a rest and Fylde cashed in with John Hay (23) and Harry Southern (40 not out) leading the way. Chris Nolan took a wicket and a couple of run outs finally saw Fylde all out for 130.
In reply Simon Hicks and Nolan fell early but a serene partnership between John Lee (53) and Dan Woods (30) saw the hosts to 91 for 2 before a remarkable collapse saw Cottam (14) once again holding the tail together to nail down the win. This time things did not work out as the last four wickets fell for 7 runs to see Torrisholme dismissed for 126, a disappointing outcome to a game they bossed for most of the day. Six points gained instead of twelve, not a catastrophe in the great scheme of things but they will want to bounce back next week with a complete performance and a win. |
